丹下左膳餘話 百萬兩の壺
Sadao Yamanaka, Nikkatsu, 1935. Tange Sazen (Denjirō Ōkōchi), the one-eyed, one-armed swordsman, gets tangled with a cheap pot that hides a map to a million ryo, plus a kid, a couple, and a clan that wants the pot more than anyone needs it. Yamanaka treats jidaigeki as comedy about greed. Of his small surviving group this is the one that still plays as a crowd picture. National Film Archive of Japan. The pot is uglier than the treasure, which is the gag.
A jidaigeki played as a comedy about greed. The one-eyed, one-armed swordsman would rather nap than fight, and a cheap pot hides a map nobody can read. Yamanaka was dead in Manchuria three years later, at twenty-eight. Watch the archery-range scenes. That is the whole warmth of a man who left three films.
