Ozu, Shochiku Kamata, 1935. Kihachi (Takeshi Sakamoto) and his two boys walk the industrial flats of Koto looking for work, catch stray dogs for coin, and share an inn with a woman whose child falls ill. He steals to pay the hospital and walks toward the police. Ozu's last surviving silent (College Is a Nice Place is lost); Hideo Mohara photographed the empty lots. National Film Archive of Japan and Shochiku materials are the source of circulating prints.
