Oyuki the Virgin

Kenji Mizoguchi, 1935, Maria no Oyuki, from Maupassant's Boule de Suif, moved to the Boshin War. Two geishas, Oyuki (Isuzu Yamada) and Okin, flee with a coach of respectable travelers who use them and then sit in judgment. Mizoguchi is already cutting for the woman the others will not look at straight. The National Film Archive of Japan holds Daiichi Eiga-period preservation material. A French story that fits a Japanese civil-war road without much stretching.
