Blade af Satans Bog
Carl Th. Dreyer, Nordisk, 1920. Four episodes, Satan walking through Jerusalem, the Spanish Inquisition, the French Revolution, and the Finnish Civil War of 1918, finding a weak place each time. Dreyer later said he had Griffith's Intolerance in mind when Nordisk asked for something large. The last story is the one shot nearest to the war it depicts. Helge Nissen plays Satan in every century, a hired continuity the studio could afford.
Dreyer's Intolerance: four centuries, one Satan, a weak place in each. Skip to the Finnish episode, shot nearest the war it shows. You can watch him learn, story by story, that a face is enough.
The Supernatural and the Occult
Satan as a hired continuity: the same actor tempting four centuries. Dreyer's uncanny is persuasion, not apparition. Watch the Finnish episode, the one closest to its own war, where the Devil is a man in a room explaining a choice.
