Gösta Berlings saga
1924 · 206 min · SE
Directed by Mauritz Stiller
Stiller, Svensk Filmindustri, 1924, from Lagerlöf, in two parts. Gösta Berling (Lars Hanson), a defrocked priest, drifts through Värmland manor houses; Greta Gustafsson, soon Garbo, is Elizabeth Dohna, the Italian-born wife who looks at him too long. SFI's 2018 restoration added about sixteen minutes from tinted nitrates in Lisbon, Paris, and Berlin, plus Gosfilmofond copies, and put the original tints and titles back. It was her ticket out. The fire in the snow is Stiller showing off the climate.
