Flickan i frack
Karin Swanström, 1926, from Hjalmar Bergman's novel. Katja (Magda Holm), about to leave school, has no ball gown; she puts on her brother's tails and goes anyway, then has to live with the town's talk. Swanström, an actress who also directed, keeps the comedy on clothes and who is allowed to wear them. SFI circulates the film among late gold-age comedies. A gender joke with a provincial price. The suit is funnier than the speeches.
A woman directing, a girl in her brother's tailcoat, and a town that has to decide what it saw. Swanström plays it as a comedy about permission. The suit gets the laughs. The gossip gets the last reel.
