Zvenyhora

Alexander Dovzhenko, VUFKU (Odesa), released 1928. An old man guards Scythian treasure at Zvenyhora while centuries pass: Varangians, Haidamakas, the World War, two grandsons, one Red, one not. Ukrainian intertitles were stripped for a Russian release in the 1930s. The Dovzhenko Centre's 2011 restoration put Ukrainian titles back from his published script. Eisenstein admired the picture. A national epic that keeps changing its mind about which century is present.
