Paris, 1871. Louise sells gloves at a department store called the New Babylon while the Prussians close in and the Commune takes the city. Kozintsev and Trauberg cut the store's sales and its owners' cabaret against the barricades as if the whole city were a carnival. Jean, the soldier she loves, is on the other side, and the film ends with him digging her grave.
In one programme
The Factory of the Eccentric Actor takes on a massacre. Shostakovich wrote his first film score for it, and it fought the picture in some houses.
