Vsevolod Pudovkin, Mezhrabpom-Rus, 1926, from Gorky's novel of 1905. A mother (Vera Baranovskaya) watches her son Pavel turn from the factory to the underground; after the gendarmes take him she carries the flag herself. Anatoli Golovnya photographed the interiors and the ice. The last movement across the thaw is the montage Pudovkin wanted: a political fact given as weather. Gosfilmofond materials feed the standard restorations. Baranovskaya's face does the conversion the titles would only name.
