Ivan

A mother hears of her son's death on the dam site and runs through it, doors opening ahead of her, in a single take of grief. That is Dovzhenko's. The story is the plan's: Ivan, a peasant boy, comes to the building of the Dnieper dam with his father, a loafer the film treats as comedy, a worker dies, and the boy learns that strength is not enough. The river in the opening reels is shot as if nothing had ever been built on it, and the sound is used against the image rather than with it. His first sound film; he was attacked for it and made Aerograd next. Ukrainfilm, 1932.
