Alice in Wonderland

Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow, Walton-on-Thames, 1903. May Clark, a studio cutter, plays Alice; Hepworth is the frog footman, his wife the White Rabbit and the Queen, and Blair the dog (later Rover) appears. About 800 feet, sold in sixteen scenes, with costumes and flats after Tenniel and optical printing so Alice can swell and shrink. The BFI holds the only known copy: originally about twelve minutes, eight survive, tinting restored in 2010. AFI and BFI both call it the first screen Alice.
