One of Anna May Wong's European films, made during her years in exile from Hollywood's limited roles. After a painter murders a man at the behest of his manipulative lover Gloria, he flees to the South Seas, where he finds both a new life and a new love. Wong brings her characteristic elegance and emotional depth to what could have been a stock exotic-romance role. The European productions offered Wong something Hollywood rarely did: substantial roles, leading parts, and a measure of creative respect. This Richard Eichberg-directed drama, while modest in scope, is part of a crucial chapter in Wong's career — the years when she proved to international audiences that she was a genuine dramatic actress, not just the decorative stereotype Hollywood kept trying to make her.
