Richard Eichberg, UFA / British International, 1928, written by Karl Vollmöller for Anna May Wong after she left Hollywood. Wong is Song, pulled into a knife-thrower’s act in an Asian port; Heinrich George is John, still stuck on dancer Gloria. He goes blind after a robbery; she stays. German title Schmutziges Geld, British Show Life; they renamed it Song after Wong Liu Tsong. The New York Times reported Berlin critics praised the star and called her Chinese, not American. Walter Benjamin watched her cry on the Neubabelsberg lot. A colonial melodrama that finally gives her the frame.
