1917 · 26 min · US

Directed by Charlie Chaplin

Chaplin, Mutual, Lone Star, released 22 October 1917, the last of the twelve two-reelers. Convict 23 escapes a shore prison, evades the guards, and pulls a drowning mother and daughter from the surf. Invited home as a gentleman, he spends a party dodging a rival and the police who have seen his photograph. Edna Purviance is the daughter; Eric Campbell the suitor. Ice cream, a balcony, a chase through the house. Chaplin's Mutual contract paid $10,000 a week, then the highest salary in films.
