Easy Street

1917 · 26 min · US

Directed by Charlie Chaplin

Chaplin, Mutual, Lone Star studio, Hollywood, released 22 January 1917. A derelict (Chaplin) hears a mission sermon, notices Edna Purviance, and signs on as a policeman assigned to Easy Street, where Eric Campbell, the neighborhood bully, treats the new badge as a toy. Two reels. Chaplin built a slum block on the lot: tenements, a police station, a mission front. The lamppost gag and the dope-in-the-lamp business are the reel's machinery, already playing like a small feature among the Mutuals.
