The Student of Prague

Henrik Galeen, Sokal-Film, 1926, from Hanns Heinz Ewers, a remake of the 1913 picture. Conrad Veidt is Balduin, a student who sells his reflection to Scapinelli (Werner Krauss). The double then walks Prague on its own. Günther Krampf photographed the split-screen so Veidt can fence himself. Staaken studios and old Prague streets. The Faust bargain is the plot Ewers had already used. Veidt, between Caligari and The Man Who Laughs, treats the mirror as a contract. Berlin opening 25 October 1926. The student is broke. The price is a reflection.
