Faust

Faust - Eine deutsche Volkssage

1926 · DE

Directed by F. W. Murnau

F.W. Murnau's visually intoxicating retelling of the Faust legend — the last and most lavish film he made in Germany before departing for Hollywood. The devil Mephisto (a magnificently sinister Emil Jannings) wagers with an archangel for the soul of the aged alchemist Faust (Gösta Ekman), tempting him with restored youth, unlimited power, and the love of the beautiful Gretchen. Murnau fills every frame with astonishing trick photography: Mephisto's enormous shadow spreading across an entire town, Faust's flight over miniature landscapes on Mephisto's cloak, hellfire erupting from the earth. The special effects remain genuinely awe-inspiring a century later. Beneath the spectacle lies a surprisingly tender love story and a meditation on temptation, regret, and whether redemption is ever truly beyond reach.
