Directed by F. W. Murnau
A clerk is knocked down in the street by a woman in a white carriage and spends the film chasing her image into debt and forgery. Murnau does the nervous breakdown with the camera: superimpositions, a street that tilts, buildings that lean in on the man, and the carriage sequence that starts it. Alfred Abel, Lil Dagover. From Gerhart Hauptmann, 1922, the same year as Nosferatu.
