Directed by Cecil B. DeMille, Joseph Levering
DeMille and Mary Pickford, 1917: an American girl trapped in France when the war starts, torn between a German and a Frenchman, and finally a patriot. Artcraft. Pickford, America's sweetheart, in a propaganda feature that treats the Lusitania as a plot point. DeMille shoots her as both victim and flag. It is a war picture that knows the star is the argument, and the argument is that the girl next door has chosen a side.
