Directed by James Whale
A plane goes down in the Pacific and the survivors, a nurse, a gangster, a senator, a munitions salesman, a rich woman and her maid, come ashore on an island owned by a man who does not want them, and who has a boat and a reason for being there. James Whale, working off his contract after his fight with the studio over The Road Back, keeps his eye for the awful and the absurd, and the film is better than the assignment. John Boles is the owner, Madge Evans the nurse, Bruce Cabot the gangster. Universal, 1938, sixty-five minutes.
