Hula

Victor Fleming, Paramount, 1927, from Armine von Tempski's novel. Clara Bow is Hula Calhoun, a Hawaiian planter's daughter. The AFI: she wants English engineer Anthony Haldane (Clive Brook), who is married; at her birthday she dances him into a divorce promise; she has a dam dynamited so the wife will let go. Infobox sixty-four minutes, released 27 August. William Marshall photographed it. Bow in a grass skirt, Fleming keeping the camera on the dam, which does the dirty work of a drawing-room plot.
