A doctor leaves his fiancée for a cabaret dancer, retreats to a fishing village, and cures a blind painter who then takes the dancer from him. Conrad Veidt is the painter, and his entrance is the frame Murnau would use for Orlok, being tried out. The earliest Murnau that survives, and the only one for which the camera negative exists. 1921, eighty-one minutes, with Olaf Fønss.
