I Accuse

J'accuse

1919 · FR

Directed by Abel Gance

Abel Gance, Pathé, shot August 1918 to March 1919. In a Provençal village the poet Jean Diaz (Romuald Joubé) loves Edith (Maryse Dauvray), wife of François (Séverin-Mars); both men go to the front and Edith is taken east, coming home with a child. Gance re-enlisted in the Section Cinématographique and cut Battle of Saint-Mihiel footage, shot beside the U.S. Army, into the last act. The dead who rise were two thousand soldiers on leave from Verdun; he later told Kevin Brownlow most of them were gone within weeks. Jean dies accusing the sun.
