A woman takes a diplomat off his ship and drains him, over sixty-seven minutes, to the floor. Theda Bara is the Vampire, and the last reel, the man on the stairs, is the picture: the vamp as a genre, and she does not blink. Bara herself was invented by the publicity office, an Ohio tailor's daughter sold as Egypt. Frank Powell directed for Fox in 1915, from Kipling's poem by way of a Broadway play.
