Laugh, Clown, Laugh

1928 · 74 min · US

Directed by Herbert Brenon

Herbert Brenon, MGM, 1928, from the David Belasco and Tom Cushing play. Lon Chaney is Tito, a circus clown who raises an abandoned child, Simonetta (Loretta Young, fifteen, billed as Gretchen), and realizes he loves her when Nils Asther’s count does too. He goes to a doctor because he cannot stop the grief that is also his act. Chaney asked for Young and worked without heavy appliances. Seventy-four minutes. The smile is painted on because that is the job. Young later said he treated her as a partner, not a prop.
