The Red Kimona

1925 · US

Directed by Walter Lang, Dorothy Davenport

Dorothy Davenport (billed as Mrs. Wallace Reid) produced and partly directed this 1925 reform picture about a woman (Priscilla Bonner) who kills the man who put her in a house and then cannot get out of the story the papers write. From a real case. The red kimono is the costume the city puts on her. It is a silent social film with a woman in charge of the production, and the production is an argument: the system, not the girl. Released the year Reid's widow was still making pictures out of his death.
