Now and Forever

Jerry Day lives by small swindles and has a daughter he has never raised, living with his dead wife's rich family; he goes to sell his rights to the child and brings her away instead. The girl reforms him for a while, until a stolen necklace hidden in her teddy bear ends that. Shirley Temple, six, was the year's biggest star, and the studio built the picture to put her beside Gary Cooper; the scenes between them are the reason it exists and the reason it works.
