A Farewell to Arms

1932 · US

Directed by Frank Borzage

Frederic Henry arrives at the Milan hospital and the camera is on the stretcher, ceilings and faces going by. Borzage did not want the war; he wanted the two of them in a room, and that is what he filmed, with the retreat from Caporetto as a montage of mud and bells. Gary Cooper drives the ambulance, Helen Hayes nurses, Adolphe Menjou's Rinaldi meddles out of love for his friend. Charles Lang won the Academy Award for the photography. Two endings were made, one in which she lives, and Hemingway disowned the film. Paramount, 1932.
