The Show

1927 · 76 min · US

Directed by Tod Browning

Tod Browning's feverish, darkly erotic sideshow melodrama — one of the most atmospherically charged films of his career. John Gilbert plays Cock Robin, the swaggering barker of a Hungarian Palace of Illusions, who performs a nightly "Salome" decapitation act with his beautiful assistant while navigating a treacherous love triangle with a poisoner and a blind man's daughter. The sideshow setting allows Browning to indulge his obsession with performance, deception, and the grotesque, and the film's climax — involving a hidden trapdoor and a very real threat of death — is pure pulp genius. Renée Adorée brings genuine warmth to the ingénue role, and Gilbert, in one of his most physical performances, proves he was far more than just a pretty face. Lurid, atmospheric, and compulsively watchable.
