Tod Browning, Universal, 1923, held from a 1921 shoot. Priscilla Dean and Raymond Griffith are siblings, pickpocket and the man inside a mechanical chess player, who join Wallace Beery for a jewel job and then hide in a cabin with the take. Matt Moore is the fourth. The chess Turk and the wax-museum front are Browning’s carnival brain before The Unholy Three. Shot by William Fildew, the Outside the Law cameraman; the rooms feel reused. Each thief waits for the others to sleep. Dean is still the center of Browning’s Universal crime pictures.
