Someone called the Wrecker is derailing trains on the L and R, Larry Baker's father dies in one of them, and Larry goes after him, through twelve chapters and six hours of cliffhangers kept going by the Wrecker's masks, which make him look like any of the suspects. John Wayne is Larry, and Tully Marshall and Conway Tearle are among the men who might be under the mask. The trains are real, and so is the flat Depression light of the California yards.
