When Stockholm grocer Sven Holm dies of tuberculosis, his widow Ingeborg tries to keep their shop and three children afloat. Debt and illness drive her into the poorhouse; the children are boarded out to foster homes. After a desperate night escape to see a sick daughter, and a later visit in which her youngest son no longer knows her, Ingeborg's mind breaks. Years later her grown son Erik returns with a photograph that restores her to herself—an indictment of Sweden's poor-relief system that helped change the law.
