A French violinist (Walter Slezak, young) loves a Russian princess and follows her into the Revolution, which does not care about either of them. Graham Cutts directed in 1925 for Gainsborough and UFA; the art direction is Alfred Hitchcock's, his last major design job before he started directing. The sets are the film: a Petrograd that is all stairs and shadows, a Paris that is all gilt. Jane Novak is the princess. It is a British-German coproduction from the moment when Hitchcock was still learning what a frame could do, and you can see him doing it.
