A prince drops a miller's daughter, she drowns herself, and at his wedding feast her image will not leave him alone. Pushkin's poem by way of Dargomyzhsky's opera, filmed by Vasily Goncharov for Khanzhonkov in 1910 with superimpositions for the ghost and a studio river for the drowning. Nine minutes, and the Russian cinema learning to use its own literature. A film about a man who cannot stop seeing something.
