The Devil Is a Woman

At carnival in Seville a young republican meets Concha Perez, and an older officer tells him over a table what she did to him; the film is his account, in flashback, of being ruined by degrees. Sternberg lit and shot it himself under another name, with streamers, nets and lace between the lens and Dietrich's face. The last of their seven films together, from Pierre Louÿs, and the end of the partnership on its own terms; Dietrich called it her favourite. The Spanish government objected to the treatment of its police and Paramount withdrew the picture. Lionel Atwill, Cesar Romero. 1935, eighty minutes.
