The Threepenny Opera

Die 3 Groschen-Oper

1931 · 104 min · DE

Directed by G.W. Pabst

Mackie marries Polly in a warehouse, her father, the king of the beggars, threatens to spoil the coronation, the police chief is Mackie's friend, and Polly opens a bank and everyone joins the board. Fritz Arno Wagner's camera and Andrei Andrejew's London are the film's argument, a city of fog and wet stone where crime and business are one trade. Pabst filmed Brecht and Weill's play twice at once, in German and in French, and this is the French version, with Albert Préjean as Mackie, Florelle as Polly, Gaston Modot as Peachum and Margo Lion as Jenny. Brecht sued over the changes and lost; the songs are kept. Nero-Film, 1931.
