The Cossacks

1928 · 100 min · US

Directed by George W. Hill

George W. Hill and Clarence Brown, MGM, 1928. John Gilbert as a Cossack who would rather read than raid, Renée Adorée opposite him, from Tolstoy's novella. MGM shot it silent and prepared a sound version when theaters started asking for noise. The Archive copy runs about a hundred minutes. Gilbert plays reluctance as a kind of glamour.
