Directed by Fritz Lang
Haghi runs a bank, a spy network and, in the last reel, a clown act, and his exit line, ordering the curtain down on his own death, ends the film. Agent 326 of the secret service is set on him; Sonja, a Russian in Haghi's pay, is set on 326 and falls in love instead; and in between come a treaty, a train wreck in a tunnel, a Japanese envoy who fails his country, and a boxing match used as a dead drop. Lang and Thea von Harbou strip the Mabuse machinery down to its moving parts and run it at speed. Rudolf Klein-Rogge is Haghi. The 145-minute restoration is the one to watch.
